The 1D Kiwi features New Zealand's unique flightless bird, this ratite is also the national symbol of NZ. The stamp was designed in 1936 by C.H & R.J.G. Collins. The Maori panels on the sides were based on carvings from the "rapa", which is a stern ornament on a war canoe. This was later redrawn to depict the wooden slabs of the Rotorua Meeting house.
